Alloy 20 is an austenitic stainless steel developed for applications involving sulfuric acid. Its corrosion resistance also finds other uses in the chemical, petrochemical, power generation, and plastics industries. Alloy 20 resists pitting and chloride ion corrosion, better than 304 stainless steel and on par with 316L stainless steel. Its copper content protects it from sulfuric acid. Alloy 20 (20Cb-3) is an austenitic stainless steel which was designed for maximum resistance to acid attacks and as such has excellent resistance to hot sulfuric acid. Alloy 20 is also resistant to intergranular corrosion in the as-welded condition. At 33% nickel, Alloy 20 has practical immunity to chloride stress corrosion cracking. Alloy 20 is used is a wide variety of applications from Sulfuric acid pickling tanks, racks and heating coil, Heat Exchangers, Process piping, Chemical and petroleum process equipment etc. Typical Mechanical Properties.
Alloy 20 is an austenitic iron-base alloy, with excellent corrosion resistance. When comparing costs between this alloy and other higher cost alloys, the selection of Alloy 20 could result in a cost savings based on whether this alloy can meet the necessary resistance. Such applications are limited to a max temp of 1000°F per the ASME specification. Using traditional methods Alloy 20 can either be cold or hot worked. Resistant to pitting and crevice corrosion, this alloy is an excellent option. Welding this alloy can be done through MIG, TIG and SAW (submerged arc welding).
Alloy 20 is a nickel, iron, chromium, molybdenum and copper alloy. Typically, nickel makes up approximately 30% of its composition, with iron being found in equal if not greater amounts. This provides corrosion resistance, and specifically resistance from chloride stress cracking. Alloy 20 is practically immune to chlorine and was designed to be used in sulfuric environments. It is commonly applied in acidic and/or corrosive environments, such as those that contain phosphoric and nitric acid. Alloy 20 has proven to be excellent under corrosive conditions and various forms of media.
Alloy 20 (Carpenter 20) is an austenitic stainless steel possessing excellent resistance to hot sulfuric acid and many other aggressive environments which would readily attack type 316 stainless. This alloy exhibits superior resistance to stress-corrosion cracking in boiling 20–40% sulfuric acid. Alloy 20 has excellent mechanical properties and the presence of niobium in the alloy minimizes the precipitation of carbides during welding. Austenitic stainless steel can be tested by nondestructive testing using the dye penetrant inspection method but not the magnetic particle inspection method
