Duruflé: Requiem; Grunenwald: De Profundis – Sarah Connolly, Christopher Maltman, Vasari Singers, Jeremy Backhouse. Duruflé combined Gregorian chant with a unique personal compositional style in his Requiem, which has proved to be one of the most popular and enduring choral works of the twentieth century. On this recording, Jeremy Backhouse leads the celebrated Vasari Singers, as well as the star soloists Sarah Connolly and Christopher Maltman, adding a work by Duruflé’s musical contemporary Jean-Jacques Grunenwald.

From 1955 to 1970 Grunenwald was organist at the church of St Pierre-de-Montrouge in the 14th Arrondissement, a post that he combined with teaching as a professor of organ at the Schola Cantorum from 1957 to 1961, and then from 1961 to 1966 at the Geneva Conservatoire. Following the death of Dupré, Grunenwald returned to St Sulpice in 1973 as titular organist where he remained until his death nine years later.

The Requiem, Op. 9, is a setting of the Latin Requiem by Maurice Duruflé for a solo voice, mixed choir, and organ, or orchestra with organ. The thematic material is mostly taken from the Mass for the Dead in Gregorian chant. The Requiem was first published in 1948 by Durand in an organ version

Disc: 1. 1. Tu Es Petrus. 2. Psaume CXXIX, (De Profundis).

Vasari Singers, Jeremy Backhouse. Inspired organ-playing makes this a superior recording of Duruflé's Requiem. Jean-Jacques Gruenwald: De Profundis. Jean-Jacques Gruenwald: Quia Apud. Jeremy Backhouse understands all this and directs his marvellous Vasari Singers in a remarkable recording of Duruflé's healing vision of death and redemption, with powerful contributions from Sarah Connolly and Christopher Maltman. Organist Jeremy Filsell accompanies with ease and authority, particularly in the lesser known but equally rewarding De Profundis by Duruflé's contemporary, Jean-Jacques Grunenwald.
