The Jolly Boys are a mento band from Port Antonio, Jamaica. It was formed in 1945 and had great commercial success in the late 1980s and 1990s among reggae and world music fans. They released a new album in 2010 (Great Expectation) and are currently the house band at GeeJam, a hotel in Port Antonio. The Jolly Boys grew out of a group called the Navy Island Swamp Boys that formed on 11 April 1945, and often played at Errol Flynn's parties.

The amazing thing is that it still sounds exactly like mento for all of these modern touches, and if on first listen, Great Expectation plays rather ramshackle and rough, repeated listens bring out the sunshine and joy that sit at the heart of what the Jolly Boys do, and one would expect nothing less of this very special mento band.

This album of lyrically gloomy rock standards by Jamaica’s longest running mento group The Jolly Boys doesn't showcase the style in its purest form, but should help put it on the mainstream musical map. Mento was the first-recorded Jamaican music, and a means of spreading news and bawdy tales (often featuring long-suffering male protagonists). Port Antonio’s Jolly Boys began in the 1950s playing to celebrity visitors such as JP Morgan and Errol Flynn, and have continued off and on ever since.
