Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. Acclaimed conductor JoAnn Falletta has been an impassioned advocate and supporter of music education throughout her illustrious career

Conductor – JoAnn Falletta. Liner Notes – Edward Yadzinski. Orchestra – Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. Producer, Engineer – Tim Handley. Playing time: 62:13 Made in Germany.

Falletta entered Mannes in 1972 as a guitar student, but began conducting the student orchestra in her freshman year, which initiated her interest in a conducting career. While the Mannes administration at that time expressed doubts about the ability of any woman to gain a music directorship, it consented to an official transfer of emphasis for Falletta. After graduation, she pursued further study at Queens College (. in orchestral conducting) and the Juilliard School of Music (. in orchestral conducting) In May 1998, Falletta was named music director of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, and she formally took up the post with the 1999–2000 season. During her tenure in Buffalo, the orchestra has made recordings for Naxos Records and returned to Carnegie Hall after a 20-year absence.

JoAnn Falletta, the Buffalo Phil and Naxos take care of that. Maestro Falletta and the Buffalo Phil are adventurous and don't disappoint and they are good at central and eastern European classical music. Fortuitously, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra borrowed those CSO parts for this recording, and between the forensic analysis performed by the two orchestras' librarians along with Falletta, it was determined that these notations almost surely represented the composer's own wishes after having heard the premiere performance (presumably over international wireless). So what we have in this recording is an interpretation of the Concerto that is 100% faithful to the composer's intentions.

JoAnn Falletta Courtesy of the artist. When JoAnn Falleta began her career in the 1970s, there were no women conducting major American orchestras on a regular basis. Falletta says she never set out to be a pioneer; she just feels lucky to be able to do what she loves. Join us for music and conversation with JoAnn Falletta on Tuesday's Performance Today.
