Hank Ballard (born John Henry Kendricks; November 18, 1927 – March 2, 2003) was a rhythm and blues singer and songwriter, the lead vocalist of Hank Ballard and The Midnighters and one of the first rock and roll artists to emerge in the early 1950s. Ballard also appeared on Brown's 1972 album Get on the Good Foot, in a track ("Recitation By Hank Ballard") that features Ballard describing Brown and the album. During the 1960s, Ballard's cousin, Florence Ballard, was a member of the Detroit girl group The Supremes. In the mid-1980s, Ballard re-formed The Midnighters and the group performed until 2002. – Those Lazy, Lazy Days. One Monkey Don't Stop No Show" b/w "Watch What I Tell You".

In the late 1960s, he produced a variety of experimental short stories (or "condensed novels"), such as those collected in the controversial The Atrocity Exhibition (1970).

The Top Ten success of Nat King Cole's spring 1963 single "Those Lazy-Hazy-Crazy Days of Summer" sent him into the studio to record a complementary LP of songs that either dated back to the turn of the century or sounded like they did. Hank Ballard was inspired by the Dominoes' success and he wrote a song, "Let's Get It While the Getting's Good", although he was to hone it to "Work With Me, Annie" (1954). Work" was Detroit slang for "sex" and the lyric went, "Annie, please don't cheat, Give me all of my meat. Work With Me, Annie" topped the R&B charts and was also a pop hit, spawning a continuation of the saga with "Annie Had a Baby", "Annie Kicked the Bucket" and, unbelievably, "Annie's Aunt Fannie". In 1986 Hank Ballard was working again with the Midnighters and made his first UK appearance at Hammersmith Palais. This led to the highly exuberant double-album Hank Ballad Live at the Palais (1987). More about 60s And 70s US Rock Artists Dance Detroit Los Angeles Music Singers.
