Longtime Japanese musician Harry "Haruomi" Hosono's 2007 release was the latest in a long string of experimentation with different bands and different musical styles. With Flying Saucer 1947, Hosono and his backing band rove through cowboy ballads, through bluegrass and rockabilly-inspired pieces, and through ambient electronica, sometimes all at the same time. Hosono's tradition is to cross genres with ease. On Flying Saucer, he does so with such alarming comfort he's able to make Japanese retro-innovation seem familiar to a Western audience

Born in Tokyo in 1947, Hosono studied sociology at Rikkyo University, forming several bands while still in school. His first band, the psychedelic art-rock group Apryl Fool, released their self-titled LP in 1969 and broke up the same year. Throughout the early and mid-'70s, he played the part of studio musician and bassist, and formed two fusion-pop projects, psych-folk group Happy End and the jazzier Tin Pan Alley. Apart from his electronic work with his bandmates, Hosono remained active composing soundtracks and returning to acoustic pop with albums such as 2007's Flying Saucer 1947 and 2011's HoSoNoVa. Covers album Heavenly Music appeared in 2013, and Vu Jà Dé, a double-CD split between covers and originals, followed in 2017.

Harry hosono & the world shyness. Out of stocksku: FSD3700. Any new album by Haruomi Hosono is an event and this is no exception. The CD commemorates 60 years since the term 'Flying Saucer' was coined with sightings of UFOs at Roswell, Portland and elsewhere. Together with his band that Hosono calls World Shyness, he plays new versions of old Hosono tunes, and songs he has covered before, with a 'UFO' theme to them. The group comprises of Haruomi Hosono (vocals, acoustic guitar, others), Motoya Hamaguchi (drums), Hirofumi Tokutake (electric guitar), Ren Takada (pedal steel), Wataru Iga (bass) and, good to see her back, Miharu Koshi.
