New Orleans, Louisiana is widely considered the birthplace of jazz, where voodoo drum rituals, African-American slave traditions, and Latin rhythms paved the way for the genre’s first rumblings around the end of the 19th century. New Orleans has been home to such musical legends as Buddy Bolden, Louis Armstrong, and Harry Connick, Jr. Today, you can still hear great jazz all over the city, including the neighborhoods and venues highlighted below. Preservation Hall on Bourbon Street is always a hit but also visit the Mother-In-Law Lounge on Claiborne Avenue, Rock-N-Bowl in Mid-City, the Maple Leaf Uptown and Vaughn’s in the Bywater. These local dives and music venues will keep you dancing all night. It’s all part of the magic, part of the brilliant je ne sais quoi that is found only in New Orleans.
in New Orleans are some of the top around the country), hit antique shops, walk through the French Quarter, ride a streetcar and plan to costume up at least once during your stay here. Best things to do in New Orleans. Why go: The French Quarter, also known as the Vieux Carré, has been the heart of New Orleans for all 300 years of its existence, built on the banks of the Mississippi River on higher ground. Today, Bourbon Street anchors the party and food scene, while the other elegant streets house galleries, shops and music clubs, so wander around and take it all in. Be sure to stop into one of the city’s oldest restaurants here, Antoine’s, where the oysters Rockefeller dish was first invented. Also don't miss Preservation Hal, the venerable hole-in-the-wall jazz club.
Visited New Orleans this weekend for Mardi Gras and had the opportunity to check out the Barely Legal Club. To be honest I didn't really have high expectations, however I was throughly impressed. The staff from the management, bartenders, girls and other staff were very accommodating. Hot dogs in a strip club. Everyone needs to experience that, WHY NOT. I loved this place, and would definitely go back for a drink or two next time in NOLA.
New Orleans is the best place in the world to hear live music. The birthplace of jazz, this is the town that also birthed jazz greats like Louis Armstrong, Louis Prima, Sidney Bechet and Trombone Shorty. Jazz is the beating heart of New Orleans, as important to this city's soul as a rich pot of gumbo, a second line parade and the charming architecture that defines neighborhoods like the French Quarter and the Marigny. To listen to local musicians play authentic New Orleans jazz, you need to dive into neighborhoods beyond the Bourbon Street scene, although there are still a few must-visit clubs in the French Quarter. The club's live Dixieland jazz never disappoints with local luminaries onstage nightly.
