This is not to say that there aren't some excellent things here, but taken as an album, The Magic Hour seems logy and inconsequential. Featuring the talented chops of pianist Eric Lewis, bassist Carlos Henríquez, and drummer Ali Jackson, Marsalis offers up a low-key grab bag of everything he's done thus far in his career. It's not a good sign when a predominantly instrumental jazz album begins with a vocal jazz number, albeit a stellar one featuring the epic Dianne Reeves

THE MAGIC HOUR is a very fine Wynton Marsalis album, but a relatively conservative one. I can't judge its merits compared to many of Wynton's other albums. I have only listened to a few of them. However, THE MAGIC HOUR is an hour of upbeat and accessible post-bop. Marsalis has never hired musicians who aren't up to his level; he doesn't need to. "Sophie Rose-Rosalee", to cite one example, shows what an enjoyable composer he can be. Surprisingly, my least favorite track is the title one. Others have described "The Magic Hour" as innovative. To me, it sounds like 2 or 3 fine songs that don't quite fit together. If you're looking for Marsalis, the serious composer of sit-in-your-seats music, you won't find him here. However, you will find an hour of very enjoyable jazz.
