The 1974 album from the revolutionary singer and poet braided together his passion for music and literature. Its emotional pitch and fervent political tenor still resonates loudly in America today. It was there that he and Jackson, along with Danny Bowens on bass and Bob Adams on drums, made Winter in America, an album many consider their undisputed masterpiece, a synthesis of his parallel artistic mediums. In that age of politically charged concept albums, most notably Marvin Gaye’s superb What’s Going On, Gil’s inspired lyrical goal with this new album was to create an audio novel that told the story of a junkie veteran from Vietnam hanging on the corner of Any Ghetto, . and studying the world through his stoned perceptive.
Winter In America was poet and writer Gil Scott Heron's fourth album, and the first to be co-billed with his flautist, keyboard player and co-writer Brian Jackson. Recorded in September 1973 and released the following year, it captures Scott Heron at a turning point, largely leaving his heavier raps behind in favour of a floating ambience, with his poetry and song being illuminated by Jackson's superb instrumentation. Winter In America is probably Scott-Heron's most complete album. It certainly is one of his most compelling; it also highlights how great a foil Brian Jackson was to him. An affecting work.
I found the most interesting parts to do with censorship in America, from titbit becoming tidbit, cockroach becoming roach and to the extreme case of political correction which wanted to stop the use of terms like blackeye and blacksmith (but interestingly enough, not blackout). The Premise Bill Bryson takes a trip through the history of America in an attempt to identify and explain some of the origins and peculiarities behind phrases and popular words.
Filmed over the course of one winter in one American city, the film presents an intimate snapshot of the state of the nation's economy as it is playing out in millions of American families, and highlights the human consequences of the decline. 0Check in.
