Waltz for Debby is a self-conscious celebration of the pianist as composer, featuring material by such luminaries of this species as Bill Evans (the title track), Michel Legrand ("You Must Believe in Spring"), Chick Corea ("Bud Powell"), and Friedman himself. Where the live performance and the album diverge is in the contributions of the sidemen. Mraz is usually called for to provide his particularly lyrical, almost folky lines and solos to the mix while Lewis Nash hums along, integral but not overpowering

This trio date led by Don Friedman is comparable to a typical Bill Evans session in several ways. Joined by bassist George Mraz and drummer Lewis Nash, one hears three strong musicians interacting rather than a rhythm section playing follow-the-leader with the pianist. Secondly, Friedman, like Evans, loves playing great melodies. Finally, Friedman is a gifted composer, though his pieces are obviously not as well known as Evans' works

Waltz for Debby is a live album by jazz pianist and composer Bill Evans and his Trio consisting of Evans, bassist Scott LaFaro, and drummer Paul Motian. It was released in 1962. The album was the fourth and final effort from the unit-LaFaro died in a car accident just ten days after the live date at the Village Vanguard from which Waltz for Debby and its predecessor, Sunday at the Village Vanguard were taken. The loss of LaFaro hit Evans hard, and he went into a brief seclusion
