Mellow Yellow is the fourth album from British singer-songwriter Donovan. It was released in the US in March 1967 (Epic Records LN 24239 (monaural), BN 26239 (rechanneled stereo), but not released in the UK because of a continuing contractual dispute that also prevented Sunshine Superman from a UK release. In June 1967, a cross-section of both albums was released as Sunshine Superman (Pye Records NPL 18181) in the UK. "Mellow Yellow" was the name of Donovan's hit single released the previous November.

Produced by Mickie Most. Mellow Yellow Lyrics. I'm just mad about Saffron Saffron's mad about me I'm just mad about Saffron She's just mad about me. They call me mellow yellow (Quite rightly) They call me mellow yellow (Quite rightly) They call me mellow yellow. I'm just mad about Fourteen Fourteen's mad about me I'm just mad about Fourteen She's just mad about me. Quite a few things. Being mellow, laid-back, chilled out. ‘They call me Mellow Yellow, I’m the guy who can calm you down. Lennon and I used to look in the back of newspapers and pull out funny things and they’d end up in songs. So it’s about being cool, laid-back, and also the electrical bananas that were appearing on the scene – which were ladies vibrators. Mellow Yellow" Track Info.

2. Writer In The Sun (Album Version). 3. Sand And Foam (Album Version).

The title track, Mellow Yellow opens up this album with the same general feel-good vibe as Sunshine Superman did for its own album. One remarkable fact check makes both similarly unique to those of us from the classic rock era. As Sunshine Superman featured a lead electric guitar from Jimmy Page himself, Mellow Yellow featured John Paul Jones on a walloping bass guitar line and Jones was arranger for the song as well, setting up the infectious brass that supplants the whole song. Two days after the release of MELLOW YELLOW, Donovan joined an all-star chorus for the live international broadcast of The Beatles' All You Need Is Love from Abbey Road on the Our World BBC television special. The all-star chorus included The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Marianne Faithful, Keith Moon, and Graham Nash among others.

This is a very good selection of songs and I could only wish they had been recorded in stereo with some production polish for a better and more consistent sound. Unfortunately the album sounds like the hodgepodge it is. But on a track for track basis this is one of the best pop albums of its time.
