3. The Map. Jim Weiss.

1 Jim Hawkins' Story My father had an inn near the sea. It was a quiet place. One day, an old man came to our door. Everybody ran to see the island. I waited for a minute, then I climbed out of the barrel and ran, too. The ship was now quite near an island. Does anybody know this island? Captain Smollett asked. There were a lot of pirates here in the old days. That hill in the centre of the island is called the Spy Glass. Then Captain Smollett showed Silver a map of the island. Silver looked at the map very carefully, but it was not Billy Bones’s map. It did not show the treasure.

Part Three of Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island is titled My Shore Adventure. It is the section of the book where Jim Hawkins' adventure first takes him on to the shore of Treasure Island. Part Three is comprised of chapters thirteen, fourteen and fifteen. From the novel 'Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson: Long John Silver to Hawkins on the parrot; "She's been at Madagascar, and at Malabar, and Surinam, and Providence, and Portobello. She was at the fishing up of the wrecked plate ships. It's there she learned 'Pieces of eight,' and little wonder; three hundred and fifty thousand of 'em, Hawkins!"

Essays and criticism on Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island - Treasure Island, Robert Louis Stevenson. Set in the 1740s, Treasure Island describes the adventures of a boy named Jim Hawkins after he discovers a map showing the way to buried treasure. Jim's father is the landlord of the Admiral Benbow, an inn where Billy Bones, an old seaman who once served under the pirate Captain Flint, takes up lodgings. A treasure map is found in Bones's sea chest following the former pirate's death; and with this in hand, Jim, Dr. Livesey, Squire Trelawney, and Captain Smollett set sail aboard the Hispaniola to find Treasure Island, which lies off the coast of South America.

Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894) was born in Edinburgh. In the brief span of forty-four years, dogged by poor health, he made an enormous contribution to English literature with his novels, poetry, and essays. The son of upper-middle-class parents, he was the victim of lung trouble from birth, and spent a sheltered childhood surrounded by constant care. His travel essays were publihsed widely, and his short fiction was gathered in many volumes. Twas easy to see, written as it was, from young Jim Hawkin's perspective, how this was a book tailored to boys. Of course, Jim sure had a lot of good luck, to make it through the entire (mis)adventure.

Here you, matey, he cried to the man who trundled the barrow; bring up alongside and help up my chest. Jim, says he, rum; and as he spoke, he reeled a little, and caught himself with one hand against the wall. Are you hurt? cried I. Rum, he repeated. I must get away from here. Rum! rum! I ran to fetch it; but I was quite unsteadied by all that had fallen out, and I broke one glass and fouled the tap, and while I was still getting in my own way, I heard a loud fall in the parlour, and, running in, beheld the captain lying full length upon the floor. At the same instant my mother, alarmed by the cries and fighting, came running down-stairs to help me.
