Gamelan semar pegulingan is an old variety of the Balinese gamelan. Dating back from around the 17th century, the style is sweeter and more reserved than the more popular and progressive Gamelan Gong Kebyar. Semar pegulingan is derived from the ancient flute ensemble gamelan gambuh which utilizes a 7 tone scale. Semar pegulingan also uses the 7 tone scale which enables several pathet (similar to modes or scales) to be played.

Lila Cita: Lovers of Beauty - Gamelan Semar Pagulingan. Lila Cita (pronounced 'Leela Cheetah") can be translated as 'amusement of the heart' or 'happiness'. Lila Cita are the UK's premier Balinese gamelan performing group, and were founded in 1992 by Andy Channing to specialise in playing a wide range on Balinese music.

Although UC Berkeley's music department already owns a Javanese gamelan, the Balinese gamelan differs dramatically in sound, appearance, playing technique, repertoire and performance contexts. It was brought to UC Berkeley last summer by Gold and Ben Brinner, an ethnomusicologist at UC Berkeley. Gold is a member of Gamelan Sekar Jaya. The new gamelan was purchased for the music department by the Center for Southeast Asia Studies with Luce Foundation funds.

The gamelan ensemble is made up of sixteen bronze xylophones, several gongs and gong-chimes, drums, cymbals, and bamboo flutes-over forty instruments in total. This particular type of gamelan is a relatively new style known as gamelan semara dana. The instruments were custom-built in the workshop of I Wayan Beratha, one of Bali’s most beloved teachers, composers, and instrument makers. Beratha is shown here (on the left) playing drums with his former student, I Ketut Gede Asnawa, a lauded musician in his own right and one of the ensemble’s past guest directors. The instruments are covered with elaborate carvings depicting important scenes from the Hindu epic the Ramayana and various other stories. Each gamelan ensemble functions as one gigantic instrument, with its own unique timbre and tuning. In the summer of 2009, the gamelan instruments required their first retuning.
