Les brigands (The Bandits) is an opéra bouffe, or operetta, by Jacques Offenbach to a French libretto by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy. Meilhac and Halévy's libretto lampoons both serious (Schiller's play set to music by Verdi) and light theatre (Fra Diavolo and Les diamants de la couronne by Auber). The plot is cheerfully amoral in its presentation of theft as a basic principle of society rather than as an aberration

The idea for a unique festival orchestra of international standing in Lucerne goes back to Arturo Toscanini, who in 1938 convened acclaimed virtuosos of the time into an elite ensemble with the legendary Concert de Gala. It was 65 years later that the conductor Claudio Abbado and Festival Executive and Artistic Director Michael Haefliger established a connection to this moment of the Festival’s birth and founded the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA, which made its public debut in August 2003. With Riccardo Chailly, this unique orchestra once again has an Italian music director. The orchestra sets the tone for the opening week of LUCERNE FESTIVAL with several symphony concerts. And at the season’s end comes the grand tour. Foreign residencies have taken these musicians throughout Europe and to Asia and the USA.

In contrast, the music for the bandits themselves is consistently light-hearted and fun and quite touching when it comes to the young lovers, Fiorella and Fragoletto. The arrival of the delegation from Granada provides a welcome opportunity for some Spanish colour. Gardiner’s performance dates from towards the end of his time as director of the Opera de Lyon and, while it may not be as widely loved as his recording of Chabrier’s L’Etoile, it is every bit as successful. There is a wonderful feeling of ensemble about the performance and you very much get the feeling that this was a true company.
