Davis' Berlioz performances on Philips were classics, and he made the first recording of Benvenuto Cellini in 1972, with a stellar cast that included Nicolai Gedda in the title role, along with Christiane Eda-Pierre, Jules Bastin, Jane Berbié, Roger Soyer, and Hugues Cuénod. It's unfortunate that this version, recorded live with the London Symphony Orchestra, which reflects Davis' lifetime of familiarity with the opera and is probably his final commercial recording of it, doesn't have a more compelling cast.

Berlioz: Benvenuto Cellin. has been added to your Cart. Colin Davis recorded most of Berlioz for Philips back in the 1970s, but has seemed determined to re-record most of it with the London Symphony Orchestra house label LSO live; the performance at hand is based on concert performances from 2007. Although Davis's basic approach remains much the same, I find many of his LSO interpretation to be even more compelling; his orchestral and choral forces are, if possible, even better than they were 35 years ago.

Benvenuto Cellini is an opera semiseria in two acts with music by Hector Berlioz and libretto by Léon de Wailly and Henri Auguste Barbier. It was the first of Berlioz's operas, premiered at the Académie Royale de Musique (Salle Le Peletier) on 10 September 1838. The story is inspired by the memoirs of the Florentine sculptor Benvenuto Cellini, although the elements of the plot are largely fictional. The opera is technically very challenging and rarely performed.

conductor today excels Sir Colin Davis in Berlioz's music and this performance of perhaps his most brilliant opera finds him in sparkling form. The American soprano Laura Claycomb is excellent in the coloratura role of Teresa, dominating the performance with her charm and vivaciousness' - Sunday Telegraph (UK), 27 April 2008.
