The compositions by Olivier Messiaen include works for chamber ensemble, orchestra, vocal music, music for piano and organ, as well as some of the earliest electronic music, with his use of the ondes martenot in several of his conpositions. Messiaen's work is characterised by rhythmic complexity, his interest in ornithology and birdcalls, and his system of modes of limited transposition. Works are listed both by genre and chronologically. Saint-François d'Assise ("St. Francis of Assisi"), (1975–83).

Messiaen's Theme and Variations (recorded 1985) fit into the disc very well, their energy and elegance exceeding usual experimentations of the 20th century composers and helping make the name of Messiaen timeless. All in all, this is a representative CD that any fan of any of the three composers should not be without. And once again, this album confirms it. With his musical partner Martha Argerich, Kremer makes a visceral and extraordinary tour de force with Bartok's violin sonata. Accuracy, roughness and tonal balance reveal his domain of the Bartokian lexicon as just a few.
